We develop ideas about who we are from the people and influences around us. If those reflections are negative, we can learn to distrust and even dislike ourselves. When that happens, we’re vulnerable to falling into the negative habits of self-doubt, fear, guilt, and sadness. When we base our responses on these habits, we lose sight of our best selves and our preferred ways of being and living.

Forgive yourself. Love the part of you that has been hurt and disappointed. It means that you expect something better. Admire your perseverance. Celebrate the moments when you feel confident, joyful, and free. Notice when your greatness shines through—even for a moment. Learn how to make a habit of your virtues.
