About Judith Zur
In searching for the right therapist, you are already taking a big step toward changing your life and feeling better. Perhaps you have been feeling troubled, stuck or stressed, or upset by conflict and distance in your relationships, maybe you think that issues concerning your children's behavior need attention, maybe a physical problem or stage in life is difficult. Perhaps you have suffered from a traumatic experience, depression and anxiety, physical disability, or an illness; maybe you are an expat struggling to integrate. These are a few of my areas of expertise.
I am a caring and professional person with many years of experience working with individuals of all ages, couples & families on many different issues both face to face and on line. I am a British trained Clinical Psychologist and Marital/Family Therapist who has worked within the National Health System, with NGOs and privately both in my consultation room and online with individuals, couples and families and children (online work is only with adults and older adolescents). I am registered and work according to the professional ethics of the BPS, UKCP and HCPC (see below). I offer afternoon and some evening and weekend appointments.
My practice offers you a safe, non-judgmental climate to discuss and explore your issues. I can help you to understand your emotions and reactions, achieve sustainable personal improvement and growth individually, and help rekindle your connection and problem solve within your couple relationship, family and/or other relationships. I facilitate individual, couple and family understanding reactions and problems in context, aiming to remove blame and judgment replacing this with the power of responsibility and tools to promote change.
Whatever is brought to counselling will be received with total acceptance and my own genuine desire to help you to create the changes you require. My therapeutic approaches include working in the present here and now and bringing in the past as relevant context to achieve understanding and change. My style and the tools I use are adapted to every individual and couple depending upon their wishes and therapeutic needs. Because I have extensive training and experience I can draw on elements of a wide range of research-based approaches to create the best therapy programme for each individual rather than being limited to any one particular method of therapy.
My work begins with you (if you come as an individual) or each of you (e.g. if you come as a couple/family) to tell me about the issues you would like to address and what the best outcome of our work together would look like for you. I accompany you to go deeper into your emotional experience, understand this experience and to try and put this together in the present in new ways moving you in the direction that you want to go. I take a neutral stance with couples (and other relationships) helping you relate to one another so you feel heard, validated and begin to communicate in a way that increases connection, diminishes conflict and strengthens your bonds. I help families understand most problems with their children and adolescents in the context of the family and generational patterns. Change with couple and families will happen in the present during sessions creating corrective emotional experiences of connection which is an antidote to negative patterns.
I offer therapy and counselling in English or Spanish for individuals and couples of all ages and of all cultures and gender orientations.
I also offer therapy online, by video, phone and chat. This is not a type of therapy but a way of delivering it which is especially accessible if you are very busy, travel a lot or for one reason or another find it hard to leave your house/office. I have worked online for many years with individuals and couples from across the globe, including expats and others and have found this mode of delivery to be equally effective as face to face despite the loss of physical proximity. If you have not tried this mode before I suggest you try one session and see if it is to your liking. That way you can also see if you feel comfortable with my style and what I have to offer you. You are not obliged to continue, the decision to do so is always yours.
I suggest if you wish to pursue online therapy which is a mode of meeting to have therapy rather than a method, that you try one session and see if you think that I could be helpful to you and the issues you would like to address. It is up to you to decide if you would then like to continue.
