About Elizabeth Sullivan

Dear You, Though it is a scary moment in the world, I am inspired by the power of therapy to change lives for the better. It is also a moment for the power of video therapy, for help and support for people without needing to travel.

The key development in my practice over the last two years is that it has moved mostly online. I do a few in-person sessions in Sydney, but most of my work is over video – a combination of people who simply continued with me when I moved, as well as a group of people who had ended therapy when they moved away from San Francisco, but who were able to restart with me once I began offering therapy this way.

The key to making it work is to honour the space and the time, just as with in-person therapy. That means setting up a regular weekly appointment and being in a private space where you can be present, focused, and free to speak. I use scheduling software that makes all of the logistics pretty easy. In a world where many of us change many parts of our lives with gusto, perhaps being able to stay stable with a therapist is a meaningful grounding. One “digital nomad” I work with called me her “anchor” as she moves around the world, and I can see how that fits.

I have become convinced that video therapy works. And so this is an invitation—if you, or anyone you know, might benefit from working with me online, I would love to talk with you.

With gratitude,
Elizabeth

PS: Here is an address to an academic study that concludes that videoconference therapy
has “similar clinical outcomes to traditional face-to-face therapy.”
